Deadwood
Venture back in time when outlaws ruled the notorious Wild West town of Deadwood - home to the best porkchops west of New York, apparently.
Nolimit City’s eye-catching sequel to their well-received breakthrough release, Tombstone, picks up where we left off in 2019, while enjoying a significant cosmetic upgrade. The developer have clearly found their niche with the mini-series, and the follow-up is a pleasing outing that will disappoint few.
Expect to find more Hunter Wilds, Free Spins galore and a whole host of gun-slinging action as you chase wins worth up to 13,950x your stake across the unconventional 3-5-5-5-3 reel setup.
Let’s see what else the Malta-based software suite have added into the mix with this keenly anticipated 2020 follow-up.
Design
What a difference a year makes. Nolimit City have shown tremendous progress since Tombstone hit the shelves in 2019. Fast forward a few months, Deadwood benefits from some significant graphical enhancements compared to the original. Its overall look is less cartoon-like and much more polished, giving a grittier, more compelling feel that throws you straight into the thick of the action.
To the distance our eyes are drawn towards a dusty track that reveals wooden saloons and a gloomy looking sky up ahead. Nolimit City set the scene extremely well. There really is no mistaking which part of the world we’ve rolled up into.
What starts as a gentle, atmospheric backing audio soon builds to a crescendo as the action hots up, and works effortlessly with the excellent visual production to evoke the spirit of the Wild West. Some cute sound effects also tie in well with the overall theme.
Scanning the playing area we find symbols iconic of the Wild West, each serving up varying levels of rewards. In addition to the rusty low paying playing card symbols running 10-A, the more premium rewards are claimed by catching at least 3 x Shotgun, Whiskey Jar, Money Safe, Gold Watch or Gold Bar symbols in any spin.
5 of the latter appearing across one of the 576 paylines reward you with 3.75x your stake. Not the most generous base game payouts we’ve ever seen by a long margin, but there are much richer prizes lying in wait inside the game’s myriad bonus features.
Gameplay and Features
Hunter Wilds
Look out for Wild symbols appearing on reels 2-4.
On top of their role as a regular-functioning Wild, they also make use of the xNudge feature to become become fully stacked upon appearance.
Every nudge the Wilds have to make in order to fill their reel comes with an increasing multiplier starting at 1x, and multiple Wilds are compounded to help bump up your earning potential.
Shootout
Get ready for a Shootout whenever Sheriff Badge symbols fall on both reels #1 and #5. The feature helps out by transforming all low paying symbols present on the middle 3 reels into Wilds - which, as usual, substitute for all other symbols.
Free Spins
In typical fashion, catching a trio of Scatters during a spin sets off the game’s Free Spins round. Take your pick from a bundle of 8 x high variance Gunslinger Spins, or 8 x lower risk Hunter Spins.
Gunslinger Spins
Infinite win multipliers come into play whenever you catch Hunter Wilds on the reels, and these remain locked in place for the entirety of the round. For every nudge they make, the multiplier increases by 1x without resetting.
Should you find a Sheriff badge on either reel #1 or 5#, add 1 extra free spin to your haul. If ever badges appear on both reels at once, Shoot Out Gunslinger Spins lock them in place, while turning all low paying symbols in the middle reels Wild.
Hunter Spins
You’re guaranteed to benefit from at least 1 x Hunter Wild landing with each spin in the round, and, similar to Gunslinger Spins, help yourself to an additional free spin whenever Sheriff badges land on reels #1 or #5, while Shoot Out Hunter Spins come back into play when both appear simultaneously.
Feature Buy
For an eyebrow-raising cost of 750x your stake, you can gain instant access to the Shoot Out Free Spins round. This is way above the industry average, which hovers around the 75x-100x mark, but with such potent bonus rounds on offer, it could prove a lucrative option if you’re feeling flush.
Volatility
The slot occupies the very top end of the volatility index, gearing the game towards players with a larger bankroll who are able to withstand the unforgiving stretches of near misses.
On the flipside, your bank balance stands to receive a significant boost if the bonus game ever drops organically.
Deadwood on Mobile
Deadwood has been carefully built with mobile players at heart, so you can get your Wild West fix whenever and wherever you please!
The Verdict
Deadwood is a worthy successor to what was an already popular game in Tombstone. The sequel transfers across many of the winning elements, while incorporating a handful of innovative new features to augment the playing experience further and bump up your win potential in the process. Instead of 11,456x, we now get a maximum win worth 13,950x your bet at any time playing Deadwood.
Dripping with lucrative features, the bonus rounds easily counterbalance the meagre payouts up for grabs in the base game. However, the relatively extortionate cost of buying the bonus game, at 750x your stake, is bound to stir up some controversary, and the more conservative players among you are advised against going down this route.
That said, the slot’s excellent artwork, well thought out audio number and immersive gameplay come together to produce quite a sensorial impact upon the player. Nolimit City deserve praise for making a good game great, avoiding the temptation to produce a carbon copy of the first.
