Take a wonder through the gritty, graffiti-daubed back alleys inside Chaos Crew, an original video slot powered by the software platform of Hacksaw Gaming.
Traditionally specialists in the scratch card field of gaming, the developer occasionally step outside their comfort zone into the bustling slot arena with typically pleasing results. On first viewing Chaos Crew would appear to continue in that vein, a refreshing change amid the sea of competing slot titles.
A strange looking pair of friends, Cranky the cat and his sidekick Sketchy are the stars of the show in this quirky but engrossing game, flanked from all angles by an oddly eclectic mix of symbols across the 5x5 reel setup.
There is a big anti-establishment vibe to Chaos Crew, one that draws parallels with Nolimit City creation Punk Rocker - and the game carries much of the same high octane volatility that is capable of throwing up considerable wins from time to time.
Scan the playing grid to find the weird and wonderful mix of game symbols, such as flashing brains, skulls, half eaten apples, moths, black eight balls and random letters - all giving off a highly neon aesthetic, which is enhanced by the bright frame housing the reels.
Tentacles belonging to some form of sea denizen yield the highest payouts in the base game - worth 12x your wager for 5 of a kind across one of the 15 paylines.
The mellow electro backing track is an interesting choice for the audio, and seems somewhat out of sync with the general look and feel of the game. However, it somehow marries well to produce a weirdly satisfying and rounded gaming experience.
Gameplay & Features
There’s nothing revolutionary about the gameplay. No Cascading Reels, MegaWays or win-both-ways game engines in play here. Simply line up 3 or more identical symbols starting at the left outer reel to bank yourself a win.
One half of the game’s stars, Cranky, assumes the role of the Wild - stepping in for all other symbols bar the Scatter to help you establish winning arrangements. Cranky also has another string to his bow - in the form of mystery multipliers applied to winning lines that can stretch to 5x. Should more than one Cranky symbol appear on a successful winning payline, the multipliers are compounded to boost your return nicely.
Catching 3 Free Spins symbols is enough to set off the bonus feature, which immediately furnishes you with 3 spins. Similar to other games, such as Money Train 2, free spins then continue indefinitely as long as a new symbol lands on the reels, resetting back to 3 with each new addition. Go 3 winless rounds and the feature sadly comes to a close.
During the round each reel is assigned a number, which are all totted up and multiplied by the total bet to determine your resultant haul at the end.
Whenever Sketchy or Cranky show up during the round, they come equipped with a random multiplier - which is either added or multiplied to each reel’s assigned figure like so:
- Sketchy skull – adds a number to the reel’s multiplier, from +1 up to +20
- Epic Sketchy Skull – adds a number from +1 to +2 to the multipliers attached to all reels
- Cranky Cat – multipliers the reel by 2x, up to 20x
- Epic Cranky Cat – multiplies all reels by 2x up to a max 20x
The price tag to jump straight into the round is worth 129x your stake - a touch higher than average for most online slots offering the feature - but the round is capable of snowballing into a maelstrom to dish up some tasty wins when compounding multipliers get going.
Chaos Crew on Mobile
Chaos Crew is playable on any modern gaming device, so you can give it a try whenever and wherever you feel like.
At 5/5, Hacksaw have programmed Chaos Crew with the highest volatility setting possible. Be prepared for some long, fruitless slogs as you chase wins that can climb to 10,000x your bet - making the wait worth it for the most patient souls.
Kudos to Hacksaw Gaming for branching out from their traditional scratch card roots. The developer succeed in bringing together an unusual mix of elements to produce a hugely enjoyable one of a kind video slot. On paper it seems like a title that shouldn’t really work - boasting an anti-establishment theme that is amplified by its back alley setting and oddball symbols - at odds with the game’s theme tune. But somehow the elements intermingle quite magically, and the result is a most compelling game.
Its extreme volatility score is likely to put off more casual players, though, and the theme for sure is not for everyone, but nonetheless there is plenty to get excited about here.
We eagerly look forward to seeing what else the Creative Crew at Hacksaw have up their sleeves!
